Mariano Ibáñez

Born and raised in Alicante, on Spain's southeastern coast, Mariano grew up surrounded by the light that would define his life's work. The Mediterranean sun — fierce and golden, softening everything it touches — became his obsession. “I don't paint places,” he says. “I paint how the light makes me feel about them.”

He began painting seriously in the 1980s, working in oil on canvas while practicing law in Alicante. For Mariano, painting was never about commerce or career — it was a compulsion. Weekends, holidays, and stolen hours before dawn were spent at the easel or plein air with his portable kit, chasing the light before it changed.

His subjects are the places he knows and loves. The beaches of San Juan and Cabo de las Huertas, where he has walked thousands of times. The streets of Alicante and its iconic Casa Carbonell. The dramatic Basque coastline of San Sebastián. The romantic streets of Paris, where he and his wife spent their honeymoon and returned to many times after. The green cliffs of Asturias. The wild Biarritz coast.

Over four decades, Mariano has produced more than 150 original oil paintings. His work has been exhibited at cultural institutions in Alicante and is held in private collections across Spain. But the vast majority of his paintings have remained in his studio, seen only by family and close friends.
